What is TerraCycle?
TerraCycle is an innovative worldwide recycling company that collects many items not currently recycled by our local councils. By sending these “non-recyclables” to TerraCycle, we save them from ending up in our landfills, verges and waterways and, at the same time, collect points that translate into money which goes directly to various charities.

Where is my local drop-off point?
There are a number of drop-off points close to Tywyn, Wales. At the moment, these items are being collected at:
The Old Police Station, Lombard Street, Dolgellau, LL40 1SB
All the items listed above are collected by our local eco warrior, Craig, who selflessly collects and sorts these items, sends them to TerraCycle to collect the points and gives the money to the Barmouth Food Bank/ Barmouth Elim Church/Barmouth Oasis Community Group/Y Not Drop-In Centre/Dogs Trust/Gwynedd Hospice At Home and Hwyl Nadolig.
In Llwyngwril there are two drop-off locations. There is now a labelled black bin in front of the Riverside Stores or you may place your items on the doorstep or in a labelled metal dustbin outside the back door at Bod Idris, located opposite the Blue Chapel, Salem on the corner by the car park.
These items are also collected by Craig.
Craig also collects from Barmouth Elim Church, Revelation, Park Road, Barmouth, Gwynedd, LL42 1PH.
The mental health charity, MIND, Aberystwyth located in the Cambria Building across from the pier, is also a collection point for crisp packets; Pringles tins; toothbrushes, toothbrush heads, tubes along with the outer packaging; any beauty product packaging; pet food pouches and flexible plastic bags; biscuit (non-savoury) and cake packets/wrappers.
Cletwr in Tre’r-ddol
Clewtr collects Garnier personal care and beauty products. The box is located just inside the front door to the shop.
Boots Opticians, Great Darkgate St., Aberystwyth
TerraCycle also collects plastic contact lenses, blister and foil packaging from Boots Opticians.
Other (non-Terracycle recycling)
Recently, I also became aware that clean, used mascara wands are needed at the Pets And Wildlife Services (PAWS). Just package them up in a ziploc bag and send them to 4 Norfolk Grove, Great Wyrley, Staffordshire WS6 6JS.
What becomes of these recycled items?
It is very interesting to look at the TerraCycle website to discover that juice pouches become backpacks; crisp packets are turned into casual shoes; granola bar wrappers become shower curtains. The plastic waste is ground into plastic pellets that are made into pencil cases, picnic benches, playground equipment, etc.
The Sybridion magazine and Greener Tywyn will keep you updated on any future recycling schemes and drop-off points.
