Greener Tywyn 1st Birthday Party: here’s why you can’t miss it!

On March 23rd 2019, Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd will be celebrating its 1st birthday…and you’re invited!

The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Cinema. We are preparing an exciting programme for the event – here is everything you need to know!

The Extraordinary Story of Human Beings, Happiness and Tywyn

3 p.m. – Rating 12A

Paul Allen is the External Relations Officer at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, and the project leader of Zero Carbon Britain. He will present an uplifting media presentation entitled The Extraordinary Story of Human Beings, Happiness and Tywyn. The presentation will last 45 minutes and there will be 15-minute slot dedicated to questions and discussion time.

Eco-friendly demonstrations and information stalls

Here is the current list of stalls and demonstrations at the event. We may add a few more stalls in the run up to the party.

Surfers Against Sewage

S.A.S. is one of the most active and successful environmental charities in the UK. Greener Tywyn has joined their Plastic Free Communities initiative (more about this here) and representative Alan Cookson will be there on the day to explain what the charity does and why it is important to go plastic free to protect our beaches, lakes, rivers, oceans and seas.

Tywyn Beach Guardians

Our local Tywyn Beach Guardians are committed to reducing the amount of plastic washing up on our beaches and raising awareness about the single-use plastic problem. They will have a stall dedicated to the interesting finds they’ve come across on the beach. Also joining them will be Dawn Thomas of the Living Seas Wales Project (a branch of the North Wales Wildlife Trust).

Ecobricks

An Ecobrick is a reusable building block created by packing clean and dry used plastic into a plastic bottle to a set density. They can be reused over and over again, enabling us to take personal responsibility for our plastic. It is a worldwide movement. Dianna Treganza from SS will demonstrate how to build one and what purposes they can serve.

Terracycle UK

what is terracycle

Terracycle UK is an innovative recycling company that has become a global leader in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste such as crisp packets, biscuit wrappers, and so on. Craig Dobbins, who regularly collects waste for Terracycle, will be on hand to share information about the program in our area.

Mach Maethlon

Mach Maethlon is a community organisation giving people access to land, creating edible growing spaces and running a local veg-bag scheme in and around Machynlleth. Charity Garnett will be on hand to share information about the organisation.

Energy Game

Come and play the Energy Choice game at the stall run by our committee chair, Richard. This card game, designed by Harriet Martin, is a fun activity to hone our energy saving decision-making skills, and help establish effective ways to reduce carbon footprint (and maybe even save money). It takes about 20 minutes for a small group to play the game and there will be multiple sessions across the afternoon.

Homemade Household Solutions

GTG committee member Joanna will be demonstrating some simple waste reducing ideas for the home. This will include homemade toothpaste and mouthwash (which are also included in the bathroom kit raffle prize), homemade oat milk, which will be available to try in your tea and coffee and a selection of other household solutions.

Bee Wrap Demonstration

Have you heard of bee wraps? They are an eco-friendly, reusable, washable and compostable alternative to cling film. Committee member Liz will be demonstrating how to make them yourself using three simple ingredients and there will be a chance to win a ready made set in our green raffle!

‘Green’ raffle

Our green raffle will include many eco-friendly products made by local people and ethical companies.

Prizes include an eco-friendly bathroom kit, hand-cooked crisps in compostable packaging, seeds, a refillable flask, gardening supplies, and much more. We’ll even be giving away ethical loo rolls! (Yes, you read that right!). To find out more about all the prizes, follow our Facebook group!

FREE tea and cake in the foyer and more!

Free cake (including a homemade vegan birthday cake) and refreshments will be on offer throughout the entire event.

We would love to see as many people from the area as possible, so be sure to tell all your friends and family and SAVE THE DATE! 🙂
